Today Schelfe and Associates began the installation of the furnishings for the new offices and Design Center for
Homes by Dickerson!

The team at S&A designed the new Offices and the Design Center for Homes by Dickerson which included designing the layout, millwork, lighting as well as selecting the finishes and furniture. The Design Center will allow homeowners to come to a central location to select cabinets, lighting and plumbing fixtures and all the various items needed to make their new home truly unique and spectacular. Homes by Dickerson remains one of the premier builders in the Triangle.

The new Design Center includes four display kiosks which will feature selections for tile, marble & granite, plumbing fixtures, carpet samples and cabinets and hardware. The center also includes four full size kitchen vignettes designed with different cabinets and finishes showcasing Homes by Dickerson's variety and quality of selections.

In addition to the Design Center the new location includes the offices for the entire staff of Homes by Dickerson. This new facility will allow HBD to continue providing their customers the high quality of service and attention to detail HBD is known for.

Schelfe and Associates is well into design implementation of a luxury penthouse condominium. This project located at the top floor of a high-end luxury condominium in Raleigh, North Carolina, is schduled to be completed in February 2012.

Working closely with the Owner, Schelfe and Associates has crafted a new 4 bedroom home within the exisitng 3,000 square feet of space. This new home will feature a kitchen with bamboo cabinets, quartz stone countertops and a contemporary marble backsplash. New deep stained hardwoods floors will be installed throughout and accented with stained Sapele hardwood doors.

The interior for this new home will showcase a warm and contemporary sleek look. A color palate of khaki and cream tones accented by deep chocolate and gold tones will provide the background colors. Additional accents of crimson red will be highlighted throughout the home.

Glass Stairs, all the rage!

OK so I am sure everyone is asking why build a staircase totally out of glass? We'll because they can!!! And of course because it is truly remarkable...

Not for the faint of heart or those who do not like to look down, a glass staircase can make an unbelievable statement to an interior. Visions of floating on air or suspended by light come to mind. Not too long ago the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History re-opened after a 180 million dollar renovation. The international design firm firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merill led the design work and one of the crown jewels for the new museum is the all glass staircase in the central lobby. I had the fortune of being one of the first to check it out and to walk the planks when it opened.

No matter how great a photograph can be, experiencing the real deal for yourself is the way to go. Next time you're in the Washington area check out the National Museum of American History.

Maybe not so new to the scene but what a way to say WOW... Well over 20 years ago at the Carre D’art museum in Nimes, France the glass staircase made its debut. No I have not been there yet but rest assure it's on my bucket list!

Design and the human spirit can stretch our imagination to new heights in ways we have yet to even experience. Hooray for innovation, the human spirit and the need to explore how we interact within our world!!

The Washington Post "House Calls"

Recently The Washington Post came knocking on the door of Schelfe and Associates. Tim Schelfe was asked to provide a design vignette for a weekly column in the Washington Post called "House Calls". House Calls has been a popular column for the Post in which homeowners contact the Post asking for serious design help on a home project. The designer would then work with the existing space, provide design ideas and provide the creative direction to get the project done. The designer is also challenged to work with a moderate fixed budget and the selections need to be sourced locally and available for purchase directly by the homeowner.

Tim's challenge was to redesign a Family Room.

Tim created a less cluttered contemporary style for the new look of this Family Room, including adding a creamy white sectional, a circular cocktail table with a polished chrome base and matching wood stained consoles flanking the fireplace wall. Accents of crimson red and burnt orange add color and detail to the room!

A punch of color!

How do you add a splash of color to a room without changing the entire room? Well in this case we did it with the draperies! The owner of this traditional style Dining Room needed window coverings that would bring together the colors from the area rug, dining chairs seats and the wall color. Also the drapery design needed to reflect the quality and traditional style previously established for the home.

A printed fabric with a coral color background was choosen as the body for the drapery. The fabric has a soft green garland design accented with aviary details in gold, green and pale blue. The draperies are further accented with a tassle fringe which helps define the edge of the panels and adds dimension to the overall design.

Homes by Dickerson, Design Center!

Over the past several months Schelfe and Associates has been busy completing the design and details for the new Homes by Dickerson Design Center. Homes by Dickerson is recognized as one of the premier builders of fine custom homes in the region. This new Design Center will allow their team of dedicated professionals to meet with Homeowners and guide them through the design and construction process. The Design Center will feature several completed Kitchen vignettes, displays for Lighting and Plumbing fixtures, selections for tile, stone and carpet and several meeting areas where customers can spread out their design plans and make all the necessary selections to make their home turly their own!

Schelfe and Associates worked with the team at Homes by Dickerson to design the plan, details and specifications for the new Design Center. This new space will reflect the quality and attention to detail that Homes by Dickerson is known for. Although only in the rough framing stage the Design Center will be open soon! 8th Annual Business of Design Conference

The past three days the gang from Schelfe and Associates were in fabulous New York City to attend the 8th Annual Business of Design Conference. This Conference, founded by David Shepherd, brings together designers from many of the top Interior Design firms from around the country for two days of business networking, seminars and learning opportunities.

Tim, Ruth Anne and Marlene had a great time networking with all the friends they have come to know over the past seven years of attending this Conference. Guest speakers such Stefan Sagmeister, Stanford professor Dr. Jennifer Aaker and Luxury Market consultant Steve Nobel presented topics and helped facilitate the Conference.

The Conference also included a behind the scenes "back of house" tour of the Kravet Design Offices in NYC. Kravet is the industry leader in to-the-trade home furnishings, including fabrics, furniture, wall coverings, trimmings, carpet and accessories. The private tour took us through two floors of the Kravet Design Offices and we were able to look, touch and feel new fabrics and patterns under design development. We also viewed new ideas and concepts for the Kravet furniture line and the Kravet Custom Rug collection.

For the past few years I have been a fan of artist Max Hayslette. To me the landscape images he creates are vivid, warm and fun interpretations of places he has explored. They are fun to view, fun to own and fill your spirit with warmth and calm.

In a time when economies ebb and flow, wars are raging around the world and you're just not sure what tomorrow will have in store, it is nice to have peace and serenity in one's life; to me the work of Max Hayslette provides that escape!

Bev's Fine Art in Raleigh is a fantastic Gallery and features many of the works of Max Hayslette among dozens of other artists. I have used Bev's Fine Art for many years for many of my clients and the selections and service they provide is excellent.

Working very closely with the Homeowner and the Remodeling Contractor for the project, Trendmark, Inc the design team created a Master Bath which blended seamlessly with the existing interior of the home. The design team at Schelfe and Associates created the vision for the project and provided all the design details and specifications. The construction team at Trendmark did a beautiful job executing all the fine details and provided superb craftsmanship.

Compass Pointe Spa-Pool

A few weeks ago the team at S&A installed the furnishings for the new Compass Pointe Spa Pool. Compass Pointe is a residential development located in Leland, NC, just a short drive south of historic Wilmington, NC. Compass Pointe is the development which our own Tim Schelfe was a designer "contestant" for the on-line reality series The Nations Next Top Model Home. Although Tim did not snag the prize for that competition his firm was awarded the contract to design the interiors for the Pool buildings, procure the furnishings for the Pool and will soon be completing the interiors for the Compass Pointe Grand Lanai. The Lanai will be the centerpiece of the entertainment area at Compass Pointe.

So, a few weeks ago Tim and his team delivered and set up the furnishings for the new Compass Pointe Spa Pool. The results are spectacular and the opening of the Pool was highlighted by a grand party in which over 400 guests attended the event.

A Room with a VIEW!

The Willis Tower (formerly The Sears Tower) in Chicago has what I think may be the best view of Chicago!
For those faint at heart stop here....

Last month while visiting Chicago I had the pleasure of taking my kids to the SkyDeck level of the Willis Tower, yes the 103rd floor. Although this is our second visit to the tower in 3 years this time we were there to see and experience the new Glass Sky Boxes the tower now has. YES you read right; on the 103rd floor you can literally walk on air (at least is seems like you are). You can walk out onto a 2" thick glass floor surrounded by equally thick glass walls and a glass ceiling and look straight down to the street below, just 103 stories straight down!

I have to admit it took me some time before I ventured out, but once I did the view and sensation is incredible.

So next time you're in Chicago, stop on by and test your metal at the 103rd floor!

Among our current projects is this lovely grand home located in north Raleigh. This home, all 11,000 square feet, will have a sweeping grand staircase, a beautifully detailed wood paneled library and a large glass skylight that floods the second floor with natural light.

The home sits on a secluded private lot which includes a long winding drive to the home. Scheduled completion is mid May for the home.

Bethesda Row

OK, one of my favorite places to explore, hangout and of course eat is at the way cool Bethesda Row area located in Bethesda, Maryland. Although only a few short blocks long this area on the edge of Washington DC has a tons of boutique shops, restaurants and cafes. I make it a point to stop in every time I am in the area.

Today I enjoyed lunch at Le Pain Quotidien which translated means "the daily bread". This restaurant prides itself on serving the freshest food made with wholesome organic ingredients. They also have incredible pastries! Check it our next time you are in town.

Of course other fine treats are easy to find and another one of my favorite haunts is Georgetown Cupcake. Can you say YUM. Everyday they roll out hundreds of custom made cupcakes like Chocolate Ganache, Peanut Butter and Fudge, Pumpkin Spice, Lava Fudge and of course Chocolate and Vanilla. This place will do you in!

Bethesda Row is a great place to spend time with friends or just hang out, munch on a gourmet cupcake, find a great book, shop till you drop or just watch a movie. I'll be back soon!

Business of Design Winter Conference

From February 10th through February 12th the Best Practices Network (BPN), gathered together for the annual BPN Winter Conference. This year the conference was held at the beautiful Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center in lovely Scottsdale, Arizona. Over 75 attendees from the nation's top Interior Design firms gathered for meetings, presentations and one on one networking sessions under the guidance of interior design business leader David Shepherd, founder of the BPN. The BPN Winter Conference is the "members only" gathering of the BPN.

Together with the Business of Design Conference (BOD11), open to all interior designers and held annually in September in New York City, the BPN is the premier organization of interior designers dedicated to excellence in the business of design.

The Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center provided a beautiful oasis for our group to gather. It also helped that the average daily temperature was between 65 and 75! While there I also had the great opportunity to have dinner with the National President and President Elect of The American Society of Interior Designers, ASID, Michael Thomas, FASID and Lisa Henry, FASID. Both are friends and colleagues of mine and who I serve with on the National Board of ASID.

An evening for Jerry!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending a truly special event. The event was designed as a fundraiser to benefit a longtime CNN professional video photojournalist and his family. Jerry Thompson a veteran of CNN, had blazed countless trails covering many of our nations past news stories and news events. Jerry, recently diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer, has an array of incredible friends who worked hard to make this fundraiser happen.

Titled "Our Friend Jerry Thompson Fundraiser" was held at the way cool Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar near Chinatown in Washington DC. Over 475 people crowded the floor including many top CNN and FOX news anchor men, women and staff. Cuba Libre provided incredible treats and lots of Mojitos! A live band performed throughout the evening and both a silent and live auction also helped bring in the funds!

Schelfe and Associates donated a block of time to the Silent Auction to be auctioned off with all the other items including several week long stays at incredible beach houses, a former STYX guitar signed by the band and many other cool items. The evening was a huge success and as of the count this morning over $75,000 had been raised for Jerry and his family.

Exoti-Q #3.

Yep, we hosted our third Exoti-Q last week and the event was a huge success! OK you ask, "What's an Exoti-Q"? Good question! Well, it's kind of like an upscale Barbeque with a twist. The twist is the foods being grilled are usually items you cannot easily pick up at the local Harris Teeter. Tasty treats like Ostrich, Bison, Alligator, Pheasant, Antelope and many others are marinated and grilled to perfection and then served with tangy sauces. Yes, we had chicken too! Our hats are off again to Chef Dave Bowers for engaging us in all the delights!

This event also marked a newcomer, Wines for Humanity. They provided the wine for the evening and smartly paired all the courses of the evening with terrific wines from their select vendors. Also wine was available for purchase and a percentage of the proceeds is donated by Wines for Humanity to prevent homelessness of families with children.

We typically have 30 to 45 people attend the "by invitation only" event which is hosted by Schelfe and Associates, Palczuk and Scarbrough and Cresa Partners. The evening turned out to be a great night of eating great food, drinking good wine and meeting and mingling with terrific guests.

Designer Vicente Wolf

A few weeks ago I had the fortune of attending a seminar hosted by Vicente Wolf. Vicente is one of those rare designers who throughout his career has taken his work into many facets of design. His love for photography and his enthusiasm for travel are often visual clues to the interiors he designs. I still remember the first time I heard him speak at a Design Conference in Washington DC over 20 years ago!

For this most recent seminar Vicente talked about his current work and some of the challenges his firm also faces in light of the recent and still recovering economy. He was refreshingly open and honest with his comments and his dialog with the attendees. At the end of his seminar I had a few moments of time to talk one on one with him as we discussed the future of design and what makes a "professional Interior Designer".

Classic Elegance

Did you catch this article in this month’s issue of Cary Magazine? This is Schelfe and Associates' newest kitchen design project!

This newly renovated kitchen is a favorite place for the homeowners to unwind and relax in this Raleigh home. It provides a comfortable yet elegant background for cooking, entertaining and sharing family memories.

Prior to the kitchen transformation, the kitchen in this older colonial style home had outdated finishes, appliances and a poor traffic circulation. Interior designer, Marlene Heymer, ASID of Schelfe and Associates, Inc., along with Sigmon Construction helped transform the kitchen into a large functional room with dramatic style. Marlene worked closely with the couple to understand their wishes of the overall style, feeling colors and budget. Making the kitchen truly spectacular and one-of-a-kind custom kitchen was the attention to detail to every component of the design. From the classical elements in the decorative hood above the cooktop, the fluted pilasters which pullout to store spices, to the large detailed island that seats six. The kitchen is designed to be functional as well as beautiful.

This timeless kitchen will serve the young family well for years to come. It was a great success and well planned design with a coordinated team of the client, builder and interior designer. Everything was well planned and exactly met the lifestyle and needs of the family. This kitchen is everything the homeowners wished - a spacious functional kitchen with timeless elegance!

The Jefferson Hotel

A few weeks ago I was in Washington, DC to attend a weekend meeting. Without question the highlight of the weekend was the incredible Hotel I had the fortune of staying at. The Jefferson Hotel takes refined elegance and quiet sophistication to a whole new level; to a work of art!

The Hotel recently underwent an exhaustive restoration into what is now the incredible Jefferson Hotel. We, as designers, often talk about how design and the interiors we live in and play in can elevate our spirit and provide a sense of beauty and awe. The Jefferson Hotel performs magnificently.

Forrest Perkins lead this transformation and provided the vision and design for this transformation. I cannot say enough of how excellent they executed their task. Design can make us wonder, awaken our spirit and provide a haven in which to enjoy the life we are living. I thank the Jefferson Hotel for providing such wonder...

S&A @ Market with Suzanne Kassler!

Last week we traveled to High Point, North Carolina for our bi-yearly visit to the High Point Furniture Market. This Fall market was a terrific market and an exciting time, not to mention the fact that the temperature was in the 80's. Not bad at all for fall in North Carolina!

We toured many terrific showrooms and viewed the latest and greatest in furniture, fabrics and finishes. Hickory Chair was hot on our list especially since they have moved locations at market and were unveiling their brand new showroom. Our hats are off to Jay and his team at Hickory Chair for creating a new and exciting showroom.

One of our favorite "celebrity designers" Suzanne Kassler was on hand at the Hickory Chair showroom debuting her latest pieces manufactured by Hickory Chair. Marlene and I caught up with her and shared a few stories.

The Washington Design Center

OK so it's been awhile but I am back! Earlier this week I spent two days at the Washington Design Center in Washington DC. The DC Design Center is an incredible 7 story building full of fabrics, furniture and furnishings for the interiors world. The Center is open to Trade Professionals, is easily accessible on the DC Metro-line and is a easy 35 minute drive from our DC Design Studio.

The DC Design Center is like an old friend that I haven't visited in a few years. It's where I "got pinned" when I received my Professional Certification from ASID and where as a design student at the University of Maryland I won a design competition back in 1986!

The DC Design Center will allow our firm to offer more selections of fine furnishings and fabrics to all our clients including those in the DC market, the Raleigh Durham area and beyond.

I look forward to using this "new" resource for our clients and our design projects.

After an 18 year hiatus from the Washington area I have returned to the Capital City to open a satellite office of Schelfe and Associates! In addition to our current office location in Raleigh, North Carolina this new studio office will allow Schelfe and Associates to foster new clients and develop new design work for a larger metropolitan area.

City Center, Las Vegas!

This week Tim traveled back to visit the always changing and never dull city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Tim was in Vegas to attend the largest annual design conference held for the Hospitality Design market called, HD EXPO 2010 (Hospitality Design, Expo). This three day event is the benchmark for all industry professionals involved in design, products and technology for the Hospitaltiy sector, whether for a Hotel, Restaurant, Clubhouse or other public or private resort type facilities. Tim spent two days on the floor meeting with manufacturers, fellow designers, industry leaders and of course finding the newest, coolest and best products available to bring to our Clients.

While on this trip, Tim took sometime to explore, study and photograph some of this fantasy city. The newest digs to hit the Vegas strip is the monumental City Center project. CityCenter is a 16,797,000 square feet mixed-use, massive urban complex on 76 acres located on the Las Vegas Strip. The project was started by MGM Mirage; Dubai World became a joint partner during the project's construction phase. It is the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States! Wow, truly a magnificent undertaking by a cast of thousands.

Recently Schelfe and Associates was hired to provide the design direction for a new facade of a home in Cary. Working with the Builder S&A roughed out a few design ideas. Several sketch options were presented to the homeowner and one was chosen for the new look.

Last night was the night! This was our second in a series of
"A Night Out" events and for this event our master chef, Dave Bowers, prepared a fun filled evening of interesting items all grilled to perfection. Yes we ate skewered ostrich, alligator sausage, strips of bison, delicately prepared frogs legs and of course for the slightly squeamish we had chicken and scallops wrapped in bacon.

Wow what a night! Everyone had a great time, ate tons and the conversations went on for hours. The party finally broke up after 9:00! Stay tuned for the next event scheduled for mid July.

During the 2010 Spring Furniture Market in High Point, NC, Maitland-Smith furniture celebrated their 30^th anniversary by sponsoring a new exciting design competition called: "ONE Singularly Crafted For You". The ONE Design Competition invited participants to create a signature piece of furniture, lighting or decorative accessory using one of more than 500 silhouettes available through Maitland-Smith's ONE Customization program.

"The ONE program truly embodies Maitland-Smith's approach to craftsmanship - to creating unique, heirloom-quality pieces that make a statement in every room," said Dan Bradley, the company's president. NCIDQ Examination

Last weekend, I (Mary-Grace) attended the ASID Step class in preparation for the NCIDQ examination.

ASID has long recognized the key role that the NCIDQ examination plays in design practitioners’ career plans. Passage of this rigorous test signifies that hallmark of professionalism in the interior design community, and alerts the public to the expertise and experience of the designers who has met this challenge. To that end, ASID created the STEP program to provide a broad perspective of the issues and information pertinent to the NCIDQ exam.
The STEP workshop is periodically conducted nationwide and is comprised of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 ½-day period. Participants have the opportunity to experience practice exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ and, with the guidance of experienced instructors, determine which areas require further preparation.

What is NCIDQ?

The National Council for Interior Design Qualification protects public health, safety and welfare by identifying interior designers who have the knowledge and experience to create interior spaces that are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and safe.

The core purpose of NCIDQ is to protect the health, life safety and welfare of the public by establishing standards of competence in the practice of interior design.

An independent, nonprofit organization of state and provincial credentialing bodies, NCIDQ has issued professional certificates to competent interior design professionals since 1974. Interior designers who meet NCIDQ's eligibility requirements for education and experience and pass the rigorous NCIDQ Examination are assigned a unique NCIDQ Certificate number that attests to their qualifications for employers, state regulators and the general public.

All NCIDQ Certificate holders have been educated, trained and examined to protect public health, safety and welfare. When you hire an NCIDQ Certificate holder, you hire a professional with proven knowledge, experience and proficiency in the latest interior design principles and practices, contract documents and administration and decision-making skills.
Like the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, NCIDQ is composed of U.S. and Canadian regulatory boards—and we take our responsibility to protect the public seriously. It is not enough for a provider of interior design services to understand just the aesthetics. The designed safety of interiors for home owners, business owners or users of public and private spaces requires much more in today’s complex world.

What is YOUR profession?

Here at Schelfe and Associates, we subscribe to a great magazine for interior designers titled INTERIORS and SOURCES. (Full disclosure...Tim is on the Advisory Board of the magazine!) It is always full of trends in the interior design market and thoughtful articles. Well, the following caught my eye. I know it is lengthy but I believe it represents so clearly how our designers feel. It is written by Lisa Whited who according to the article "is a certified interior design practitioner, consultant, educator, advocate, writer, and planet caregiver. She also works as a Chapter Growth Consultant for the USGBC. Her firm, Whited Planning + Design, is in Portland, Maine." These are her words published in Interiors and Sources magazine. Enjoy!

Commentary: Occupation? Planet Caregiver
Regardless of where you stand on the issue of professional licensure and title acts, the A&D community needs to universally embrace designs that protect the public and the planet.

Glancing over a simple medical form, I read the words “We like to get to know our patients.” Then appeared the word “occupation” followed by a colon; seemed innocuous enough, yet I inexplicably felt compelled to write “consultant/educator” instead of “interior designer.” Here I was not being forthright with my new dentist. I thought I was over this!

More than 10 years ago, as I was speaking at a design event, I told the audience how important it was to take the time to educate the public about what an interior designer does; otherwise they wouldn’t know the difference and would continue thinking that interior designers were interior decorators.

In 1996, I wrote a piece for IIDA’s Perspective magazine titled, “Damn it, I’m a Designer!” explaining how, despite all the misunderstanding about what interior designers do, we had an obligation to call ourselves what we are—not interior architects (it’s illegal to use that term in the United States anyway), but interior designers. Yet, here I was, selling out my own profession.

“What do you consult on?” my dentist asked. I paused, “Organizations that are trying to improve work productivity and enhance employee surroundings. Sometimes that work results in facility change and sometimes not.” Now, that was all true—it’s what I do (and why I went back to school to get my M.S. in Organization and Management), but … “Oh,” he responded, “I bet you could do a lot with insurance companies—there’s an inefficient bunch.” How would the conversation have been different if I had written, “interior designer” on the form? Would he have said, “Could you take a look at our waiting room?” or (the classic line), “My wife is great with color.” I don’t know. But, now I feel like Edgar Allen Poe in the Tell Tale Heart. What will happen when, a few visits from now, he learns that I am an interior designer? Will I be sitting in his chair, my mouth agape, hearing “interior designer fraud, interior designer fraud” every time he turns on his high speed drill?

His sign says “Dr. Theriault, Dentist.” He didn’t shake my hand and say, “I work with people’s mouths to ensure they have healthy teeth and gums, which may lead to a longer lifespan.” Yet, I know that that is one of the things a dentist does. With dentists, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, even architects, the public has a basic understanding of what these professions do. More importantly, they know that these are professions requiring education, experience and examination. But what does the public know about interior design? They know that virtually anyone can practice it (in all but six U.S. jurisdictions: Florida, Nevada, Washington D.C., Alabama, Louisiana, and Puerto Rico, which all have practice acts). Even though various titles are protected in 19 additional states (certified interior designer, registered interior designer and interior designer), what does that mean to the public? Confusion, mostly.

It made me wonder about massage therapists. I remember when the term “masseuse” was considered a cover for a prostitution ring. How did this profession gain credibility and stature with the public? It certainly has happened in my lifetime—it hasn’t taken 30 years to accomplish. What did this group do that was so effective? In researching the profession, I discovered a wonderful organization—the American Medical Massage Association (AMMA). AMMA is young—established in 1998 by a small group of healthcare professionals, “who believed a change in the practice and identity of massage therapy was urgently needed.” Here’s the point I found so beautiful about this group: They know they have detractors—people who practice different forms of massage who may not agree with AMMA’s mission; and there are several large professional massage associations that do not want to be associated with AMMA. Yet AMMA, in its holistic approach, came up with a unity statement, which in part reads:

“To all other massage therapists: Although we may come from different paths to this sacred art of healing, you are my brother and sister in massage therapy. I welcome you to both this art and profession. I recognize the beauty in your healing hands, mind and heart. … I see richness and reward in our sharing of knowledge and experience. As you are my brother and sister in healing I will uplift you. … If you need assistance, without hesitation I will support you. To those that speak against you, I will arise to defend you. If you need my good counsel or teaching it is yours. … May we never forget that we are more alike than different. … May we always realize that if there is a time for healing it is now, and it is always. For if the healers are not reconciled among themselves, from where will healing come?”

Wow … is that too touchy-feely for you? Well, come on, they are massage therapists after all. But (stay with me here) can you see a vision where we substitute design for healing? Can you imagine a statement like this being shared with interior decorators, interior designers, kitchen designers, furniture showroom designers, architects ... or with the board members of professional associations such as IIDA, ASID, AIA, and NKBA? Years ago, when I was trying to find my courage at a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) meeting (June 2000 to be exact), I shared a favorite quote from Reinhold Niebuhr, the great 20th century theologian:

“We are challenged to live gracefully with ambiguity, with the tension of both having and not having the truth. In holding to our convictions, we must also be open to the possibility that those who disagree with us may not be less principled than we and, in fact, may have the information and moral insights we lack.”

NCARB had proposed a resolution that stated that interior design was harmful to the public. A few days before the meeting, NCIDQ had filed a complaint with the antitrust division of the Department of Justice against NCARB. I believe that the president of NCARB held as firmly to his beliefs, as I held to mine. I sat in the audience as a representative from Maine’s Regulatory Board of Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers, but I was also president of NCIDQ at the time and was desperately trying to recall Niebuhr’s words about being “open to the possibility that those who disagree with us may not be less principled than we.” Those words (and drinking some good scotch with my friends that evening) helped me get through the meeting.

I remember an NCARB resolution that proposed that interior designers should be allowed to become architects with a sub-standing, recognized within the NCARB umbrella. “No,” I publically stated, “if I wanted to be an architect I would have attended an NAAB- (National Architectural Accrediting Board) accredited school, participated in the IDP (Intern Development Program), and taken the ARE (Architectural Registration Exam). I chose to become an interior designer.” I chose this?

I have taught interior design programs since 2001, even directing a CIDA-accredited program for a few years. I consistently urge my students to take a stand for the profession and to remain as committed to advocacy in the profession as they are to being great designers. Countless students have come to me saying, “So and so says I should be studying architecture because I am smart.” (As if those who study interior design are dumb—argh!) “Patience, persistence,” I preach. After talking with them and clarifying (and sometimes reminding them) why they chose interior design, I will counsel, “We need you. You chose this profession. Stick with it!”

I am a purger; a collector and then a purger … often waiting too many years in between the two actions. However, in a recent purging moment, I sorted through six cardboard boxes in my garage from the years I was on the Maine State Regulatory and NCIDQ boards. I came across letters, memos, and snippets I had been saving for this moment. As I reflected on the energy that went into the work that was inside those boxes, I realized, “It is over.” That energy must be dispersed—through the writing of this article. Those memorandums and letters need to be let go so that new positive energy can come into my life (via my garage). In this Feng Shui moment, I declared my intention to move away from the negativity of fighting for the legitimacy of my profession.

I asked more than 12 years ago in that article for Perspective, “What would have happened if the energy that was expended in the past years fighting architects to prove it is a separate profession was instead put toward educating the public about the impact of good design?” To write this article, knowing that 12 years have passed since I posed that initial question, and to know that the public is only slightly more aware of the impact of good design, makes me wonder again: I chose this?

So, today I feel a new urgency; one of protecting the environment and our children. I feel a need to turn my focus toward something that goes much deeper than defining a profession. Therefore, I propose a unity statement for the design professions, including our brothers and sisters who are decorators, kitchen designers, residential designers, or architects. This is a statement for the leaders of IIDA and ASID as well as those professionals who have chosen to not belong to a professional association. Borrowing from the work of AMMA, I propose:

“To all other designers of the built environment: Although we may come from different paths to this art of designing, you are my brother and sister in design. I welcome you to both this art and profession. I see richness and reward in our sharing of knowledge and experience. As you are my brother and sister in design, I will uplift you; to those who speak against you, I will arise to defend you. If you need my good counsel or teaching, it is yours. May we never forget that we are more alike than different. As specifiers and designers, may we make good sustainable choices for our environment and our children; may we always realize that if there is a time for unity it is now, and it is always. For if the designers of our built environment are not reconciled among themselves, from where will good sustainable design come?”

We are needed, now more than ever, to create healthy, supportive environments that will sustain us and our Earth’s resources. At the U.S. Green Building Council’s Greenbuild conference in November, biologist E.O. Wilson stated that, “A group like this one can probably be thinking of itself as a movement. And, to belong to it and to be engaged in that part of the profession that is actually making it happen is to be regarded not as an occupation or profession, but as a calling.” Not a profession, not an occupation, but a “calling.” Let us use our energy to create great environments that protect the public and our planet, no matter what our occupations. This, I choose. Will you join me in this calling?

Why an Interior Designer????

...why not just have my friend who is “good with colors” help me or perhaps the furniture store showroom employee?

Well, why go to a Dentist, when all you need is your friend who is good at pulling out teeth OR why go to an Accountant when your Uncle is really good at math and worked for a fortune 500 Company? OK, get the message? People hire professionals when they want it done right! What could be more important than your own home when you want it done right???

Since all of our staff designers are members of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), a requirement for working at S&A, and Tim is a Past President of the ASID Carolinas Chapter and currently sits on the National Board of Directors for ASID I thought I'd look to see what ASID had to say on the subject. While on their website at http://www.asid.org/ I came across this article (in red) that I thought was interesting!

Hiring an Interior Designer

Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling a single room, you want the finished space to be attractive, comfortable and functional. It needs to fit the way you live, as well as reflect your personal style and taste. Images of beautifully appointed and arranged rooms are usually what first come to mind when one thinks of interior design. Color, fabric, furniture, art and ornamentation are indeed important elements in the overall design. How the environments we inhabit look and feel greatly affect our mood and sense of well-being.

Interior Design also involves many practical and technical considerations that affect comfort, function and safety. Among these are lighting, acoustics, space planning, organization and storage, scale, accommodation of special needs, fire safety and compliance with local building codes. Interior projects include new construction, renovation, historic restoration and model homes. Specialty areas within the home include the kitchen, bath, home theater, home office and home health care and fitness areas.

A Community Far Above the Rest!

A fun and truly unique project Tim and I have been working on is a clubhouse for a new residential community called Waterbridge located in Myrtle Beach, SC. Waterbridge is an enchanting resort-style community by Waterfront Communities featuring luxurious, coastal cottage-style homes, panoramic lake views, and a stunning array of planned amenities.

We were asked to collaborate with JDavis Architects to create an interior which likened itself to the travels of J. Peterman (from Seinfeld and the famous catalog). The vision for the project is to be a very eclectic and distinctive concept with a well-traveled global undertone feeling, while maintaining a low country Victorian village vernacular architecture. The color palette we selected is a spicy color palette consisting of terracotta, browns, caramels, brick red, and creamy neutrals, complimented by an earthy green. Each area of the clubhouse and amenity buildings will take on a distinct and unique character.

Raleigh Remodeling EXPO

Tim, Marlene and Mary Grace recently took part in the Raleigh Remodeling EXPO. This expo took place at the Kitchen and Bath Galleries, Glenwood Avenue location. The two day event was well attended and Tim, Marlene and Mary Grace met with many homeowners and discussed their projects and remodeling needs. The show included cooking demonstrations and seminars including Tim presenting a seminar on "Details in Design, how little details can make a BIG impact". Tim presented this seminar three times over the course of the Expo.

Raleigh coming alive!!!

This New Years I stayed in Raleigh and experienced my first ever "First Night Raleigh". Yep, I headed downtown with my wife and kids and experienced bringing in the New Year, Raleigh Style!

It was a blast and I am so excited about the re-birth of this city. Raleigh has come a long way and the re-opening and re-design of Fayetteville Street City Plaza will hopefully foster even more excitement and growth. New restaurants, shops and museums now dot the downtown area. People are not only traveling downtown for fun but for living as well. The RBC tower has led a big push in the redevelopment of downtown Raleigh as a place not only to work and play but also a place to live.

If you have a chance spend a day or weeknight downtown in the new Raleigh!

Christmas Holiday 2009!

OK I am taking a little break from the busy world of work to have some fun in the snow with my family and relatives in lovely Appleton, Wisconsin! YEP, it is cold (a high today of 26) and a little snow (today we got an additional 3 inches on top of the 15 inch base they already had). Life is good and this IS the time to enjoy with family and friends.

We at S&A are getting fired up for the New Year and looking forward to continue providing incredible design services and of course looking for new and exciting design opportunities. We are confident 2010 will be a stellar year!

On a recent trip to Miami to attend the Hospitality Design Expo, Tim visited the both of First Light and was blown away by the creativity of these fixtures. Also, Tim has seen several of these fixtures in use at the Wynn and Encore Hotels in Las Vegas. First Light Lighting will be a new and fun edition to the lighting lines carried at Schelfe and Associates.

The awards, presented this weekend at the annual ASID Carolinas Fall Conference held this year held at Wrightsville Beach, NC, recognize award wining projects from entries throughout North and South Carolina. Tim Schelfe received an award for his work on the Master Suite at the 2008 Raleigh ASID Designer Showhouse and Tim and Marlene Heymer received awards for the interior design of the Old Chatham Clubhouse, an exclusive private golf club located near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Over the past 11 years the firm has received over 20 awards for it's residential, commercial and hospitality design work.

Nations Next Top Model Home

A few months ago I was selected as a cast member of a new web based design reality competition. This competition based out of Wilmington, NC was to put 7 interior designers against each other in the design of 7 Model Homes for a new development called Compass Pointe. Well, we had $5,000 plus 28 days to complete the task. The top designer (as voted in by YOU the public) gets the title and a cool $25,000.

April's Angels

Twelve weeks ago I was excited to volunteer as a team member for the April’s Angels organization, which is a wonderful children’s charity located in North Carolina. April’s Angels is a non-profit organization that serves Wake and surrounding counties in NC by creating fantasy bedrooms for children with chronic illness. Their mission is to bring new life into the homes of families with children whose activities outside the home are limited due to illness. These rooms encourage the children to follow their dreams, despite the limitations chronic illness tries to place on them, and create an environment that improves the family’s ability to take care of their child’s needs.

Caroline Walker, Sarah Foster and I were the team captains for the bedroom makeover of a young girl named Hayley. Hayley has already endured 16 surgeries in her young life, yet she continues to be an uplifting, positive girl. Due to her illness she cannot participate in much physical activity, so she is at home a lot and mostly spending time in her bedroom on her bed.

We were given the task to coordinate a “dream” team to help create the fantasy bedroom makeover for Hayley. We worked many weeks to make her fantasy bedroom a reality. Our team of volunteers were given a weekend to install the room while Hayley was out of town. The BIG reveal to Hayley and her family was on Sunday, August 2nd.

Shenzhen China? Where in the World?

OK it's true Schelfe and Associates has its first international project! This project is located in Shenzhen China, about 45 minutes outside of Hong Kong. It involves the design of the interiors for a large Villa estate which will become a Boutique Hotel. Tim is heading to Hong Kong on August the 5th to meet the client and present the interiors. The Staff at S&A have been working long hours to prepare all the items and materials Tim will be presenting. This is his first trip to China and if all goes well more could be on the way.

Nations Next Top Model Home - NNTMH

OK here I go! Last weekend all seven designers gathered for the VIP Cast party and Opening Night event at the Compass Pointe Sales Center in downtown Wilmington, NC. Over 130 people crowded the sales center including the designers, the NNTMH crew, Compass Pointe staff, home buyers and of course the Paparazzi, yes there was plenty of press on hand. That night the designers randomly drew for their Model Home to design. I selected The Bellamy! SO now beginning August 1st I have 28 days to design and furnish the Foyer and Great Room for this house.

The Nations Next Top Model Home!

On a recent family trip to Walt Disney World I spent many of the days touring the various resort hotels and properties of Disney. I am always amazed at the high level of creativity and detail Disney plans into its resorts. I toured the Swan and Dolphin Hotels, Disney's Beachclub and Boardwalk Resorts and spent an incredible afternoon at the new Animal Kingdom Lodge. Today I am featuring the Grand Floridian. A Must See!

Last Friday afternoon I visited a local art gallery in Raleigh, the Lee Hansley Gallery on Glenwood Ave. I had been personally invited by an local artist to view his recent work.
WOW! Jon Kolkin Fine Art Photography is an incredible treasure and a must see for all.

I have known Jon for over 10 years now, first as a client and later as a friend. Jon is an extremely accomplished local hand surgeon who also travels the world teaching his skills to doctors in third world countries. Now he is also pursuing a creative role as a fine art photographer. Jon's images capture incredible simple beauty in the world around us and his images bring forth new dimension and detail to landscapes in which we have all experienced in our lives. I would strongly recommend viewing this incredible collection in Raleigh.

Schelfe and Associates has recently been retained to design the interiors for a new 33rd floor Penthouse Suite at the recently completed RBC Plaza Condominiums tower in downtown Raleigh. This new penthouse suite will combine two currently separated two bedroom condos into one grand two bedroom suite. The new suite will also combine incredible North and South views of downtown Raleigh. Please keep checking back to see how this design unfolds!

Coastal Retreat!

On a recent family outing to Bald Head Island, North Carolina I took some time investigating some of the incredible new homes dotted throughout this barrier island. Bald Head Island is only accessible by ferry and once on the island no cars are allowed; the only transportation is by golf cart! Our family had a great time and below is a taste of some the great design treats that await you on this sub-tropical paradise.

Visions of Design

About two weeks ago Schelfe and Associates was proud to host a first ever book siging event for Tim Schelfe. The book signing was held at Quail Ridge Books and Music in Raleigh and showcased the newly released and internationally published book "Visions of Design".

Visions of Design, published by Panache Publications, LLC, showcases the best Interior Designers throughout the USA and Canada. Tim is one of only two North Carolina interior designers featured in the book. About 30 people attended the event in which Tim gave a 30 minute presentation on his work and his firm and then answered questions from the audience. A home at the Beach!

After almost two years of design work and construction, Schelfe and Associates is pleased to announce the completion of a magnificent home located along the Intracoastal Waterway in North Carolina. This home, built by Harbour Crest Homes features 3 stories of living, impeccable interior detail and million dollar views from all around. The team at S&A provided design for all interior architectural elements, finishes, lighting and millwork and assisted the owners in finishing the interior with custom made draperies and furniture selections.

Spring into Color!

With spring just around the corner, it delights me to think of the spectacular array of vibrant colors that springtime brings and the inspiration it will bring to design!

An enjoyable project that comes to mind, which was inspired by spring, was the 2008 ASID Showhouse room. Caroline, Sarah and I were excited to be selected as the designers for the foyer and upper landing.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures of these rooms…

The grass green trellis wallpaper and clear blue sky ceiling set the landscape, while the turquoise and violet accents throughout the space offers vivid energy, like flowers in a field.

We felt the modern art and accessories polish off the spaces with engaging color, motion and depth.

We thoroughly enjoyed working on this room as a team, and hope you enjoyed our modern interpretation of a cheerful spring day!

March Madness!!!

OK, here it is the second of March, Spring is on the way and we have three inches of snow! Yikes, I guess this is Old Man Winter making a final pass through the South. Anyway they are predicting 70's by the end of the week. Bring on Spring!

Snow or no snow, work and design goes on! This week we are in the process of coordinating the delivery and installation of furniture and draperies for a large custom we have been working on for almost 2 years. The house located on the coast of North Carolina is a magnificent 8,000 square foot home designed in an Italian Mediterranean style. Next week Sarah and I will be spending two days installing and setting up the interiors of the home. Also next week, all the S&A staff will head to the beach for a luncheon which we are hosting for the Owners to thank them for this wonderful project.

Color, Color Everywhere!

As I drive down highway 85, finding nothing on the radio, I look to my surroundings to excite the mundane drive recognizing beautiful colors all around me. The blue February skies of North Carolina can be initially flat, however when the sky silhouettes the green trees in front of them the blue backdrop becomes piercingly bright.

Color can be found in nature we see outside as well as the nature we see in our kitchens.
One of my most favorite ingredients to cook with is the red onion. Not only does this crisp flavorful ingredient add an extra zing to any dish but the vibrant colors can be an inspirational palette to almost any space.

We are surrounded by beautiful and inspirational colors every day. These inspirational colors can be a great way to uplift our spirits in a down economy through the exploration of new paint selection, fabrics or both!

As previously mentioned, we all headed down the road to High Point for the Unity in Design Winter Conference. It was great to take a break from our desks, see new product, and get some great advice from speakers. The pricipal designers from Bradley Thiergartner in Manhattan treated us to some light-hearted marketing tips. They were so sharp and personable! Our second lecture was hosted by New River Artisans, a custom rug company. Tobi Fairley, an Arkansas based designer and the key speaker, shared some great ways to rise above the economy. As if Tobi's sparkling personality were not enough, she has a facinating educational background. She has an undergraduate degree in Interior Design, another undergraduate degree in Accounting, and a Masters in Business Administration. It is so rare to find a designer that has formal business and financial training. This made for a very realistic and helpful lecture that gave us several tangiable ideas. Last Thursday Tim, Marlene, Caroline and Sarah headed to High Point, North Carolina to attend the High Point Design Center's "Unity in Design". This event is the second annual Winter Design Conference held in High Point which features over 60 design showrooms and manufacturers. The design staff at S&A enjoyed a full day of visiting various showrooms and attending two incredible seminars presented by visiting designers.
